Some big smiles as Budehaven's GCSE students collected their results today with most of them thrilled to have secured their place in the school's sixth form or at college.

National news once again reports a rise in the numbers of GCSE passes at grades A*- C and a widening of the gender gap with girls outperforming boys at this level. Of course, every year we have the usual GCSE debate, but for now it's great just to revel in the successes of our local students who have an amazing variety of aspirations and personal/academic achievements.
Speaking to just some of the Year 11 successes at Budehaven today (and year 10s were also collecting their results as some GCSEs are taken early at Budehaven, with considerable success) it was clear that most were having a good day. Jacob Dyer was looking forward to moving on to Truro College to take his A levels, with his friend, Peter Copplestone, intending to stay at Budehaven, hoping to take Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Art at A level.
Meanwhile, Charlotte Shemilt who is a grade 7 alto saxophone player and enjoys electric guitar, as well as attaining 10 GCSEs, hopes to study a BTEC in Music at Petroc. Staying on at Budehaven is Jennifer Hayes, who hopes to take A levels in English Language, Psychology, Sociology and Philosophy but would ultimately like to join the police force in Canada. Emily Martin managed 11 GCSEs including an excellent 7 A grades and 1 A*. she also intends to study A levels at the school.
Amber Burrow was very pleased with her results which also included 2 merits in Health and Social Care, one of the subjects she wishes to take in sixth form. Josh Ravenscroft had achieved some As in his coursework and also obtained his required GCSE exam passes so is pleased to be staying on at Budehaven, while Rachel Lowson was absolutely thrilled to open her envelope to find an amazing array of A* grades. Rachel plans to study 5 subjects in sixth form and with these grades should get off to a flying start.
Bude People offers heartiest congratulations to all Budehaven students who achieved GCSEs and other level 2 qualifications today and wishes them all a bright future.

Ah, I see. Only use the word 'hope' because people sometimes change their minds re courses, and until enrolment, there isn't confirmation, even if an offer of a place has been made. Yes, a BTEC is a very good level 3 (same as A level) option, especially for students who know they want to enter something very specific, like music. I wish Charlotte well and sure, with such great results and a lovely personality, she will go far.
There are a few free jazz events, mainly in pubs in the evening, which I have listed here on the site. Other than than, I can only suggest contacting some of the venues? Certainly, reduced rates for anyone on low incomes, including young people, is something which most events seem to offer. For those who don't know, a single day stroller ticket costs £24 and a full week £118.00 which is a bit like going to a full on music festival at V or something! While lots of people wish to support the jazz week, I suspect the cost is a deterrent.

ReportI was just pointing out that you said she 'hopes' to take a BTEC extended music performance course at PETROC, in fact she is taking this course thanks to her brilliant GCSE results, for those who do not know about BTEC this course is the same as 3 'A' Levels and means that Charlotte can go on to Universty if she wishes to.
I did make a suggestion to the organisers last year about a special low cost deal for music students but m e.mail was not responded to I can only assume they were not interested in the suggestion.

ReportSorry if I got the course wrong, Torchwood. I had written down, after talking to Charlotte, Applied Music Level 3 BTEC at PETROC. Congratulations to her, anyway, on her excellent achievement, and good luck to her with her new course. If it's any consolation (which it isn't) the EMA issue hit my family, too, as daughter has just completed AS levels at Budehaven. Probably too late for this year re the Jazz Festival but why not contact the organisers and suggest it for next year? Ditto the Strand re the fringe events.

ReportIt was great to see that the pupils of Budehaven have done so well with their GCSE results. I was pleased to see my daughter Charlotte pictured just to clarify she is going to PETROC to study music despite the removal of EMA by this government we are going to have to make sacrifices too support her financially, unfortunatly one of those is going to mean that she cannot afford the cost of hearing the musicians play at the Jazz festival. Perhaps the organisers could offer a student rate for music students such as Charlotte.
