Cornwall Council Reveals Bencoolen Bridge Replacement for Bude

Cornwall Council has unveiled its design for the replacement of Bencoolen Bridge in Bude.
-
Bencoolen Bridge, Bude
The design incorporates feedback from local residents and businesses following a public exhibition in September.
As the condition of the current bridge on Bencoolen Road has deteriorated over recent years, Cornwall Council has designed a replacement which will supplement the town's existing flood defences while being in keeping with the surrounding environment.
Having received a number of comments about the appearance of the original design during the public exhibition, Cornwall Council took on board the suggestions and designed a bridge which removed the need for large towers and supporting cables.
The proposed bridge will be a two span reinforced concrete structure with masonry parapets.
While the bridge replacement scheme will begin in September 2012, advance works will begin for two months from Monday 30 January. This work will include trenching in the carriageway and constructing piled supports for a temporary bridge which will carry diverted traffic during the replacement works.
By undertaking these works at this time of year it is hoped that the disruption to residents and visitors of Bude will be minimised and the duration of the main works in September can be reduced.

If we believe the bridge must be replaced, what are the objectors alternative to removing the trees? I would love to hear the sensible suggestions. Would it be a good idea to close the road for the length of time it takes to complete the project?.........I think not. Live with it guys....it's just two trees.

ReportI'd like to see any of us decide that trees on our property were near the end of their life and hack them down with the councils approval, not a chance! Why could the temporary bridge not be further across and take out more of the park which wil be easily replaced? I'm guessing those trees were 30yrs old + and now they're gone in the blink of an eye. I'm disgusted!

Report'Whilst it is was felt necessary to accommodate the trees on the eastern river bank the physical restrictions of the site has meant that in order to accommodate a two way temporary bridge one of the trees will have to be felled and the other tree will be cut back. An environmental report has identified that the trees were nearing the end of their life and in order to reduce the impact of the scheme we are proposing to plant semi-mature trees at the end of the scheme'.
From the county council website! Seems like another case of tree vandalism, to me.

ReportIf you follow the link to the County Council website report on the preparatory bridge works, it mentions the felling of trees (although only one)
