RIVER RESCUE: A car in the water with people trapped inside is a nightmare scenario for the fire brigade, but that's what firefighters from Lostwithiel faced in a training exercise. Their skills were put to the test when they were confronted with a crowd of bystanders – played by Lostwithiel Players members – baying for action, as well as three people clinging to the car's roof and a number of onlookers drawn by the excitement. They then discovered, from a casualty who managed to swim ashore, that there were as many as five people in the vehicle. The crews used a floating hose while specialists from St Austell and Bude used rescue swimmers and a boat to retrieve the casualties from the roof and search for the missing driver.
