One in the Eye for Beeching

Great to read on the BBC today that Helston Railway Preservation Society restored the line from Trevarno to Truthall Bridge which opened in December. Around a mile of track has so far been created along with a platform at Trevarno. It's taken 5 years and cost £60,000 but it's one in the eye for Beeching who stopped the line operating back in 1965 as part of his huge array of nationwide cuts. His axe, of course, included Bude, which no longer has rail links to anywhere. More than 1000 passengers have used the new line..........

Did anyone go to the Parkhouse to see the Cornwall Council core strategy vision for housing for the next 20 years? We shall have to have 900 houses in Bude/Flexbury/Poughill/Stratton area. We can express an opinion and comment on line. There is a 128 page book of the plan for the whole of Cornwall obtainable from the one stop shop I imagine, if you didn't go todays consultation & pick one up. On page 53 one reads that Bude Stratton has access to a wide range of infrastructure and growth that can help maintain or enhance these services!! That is not true!! why then have we been begging for a new hospital, the schools are overcrowded, the bus services are far from adequate and there are no trains! That make us really cross. They are not listening to us. But if we HAVE to have 900 houses - that includes the Binhamy 450, then we MUST have better transport and access to Bude. We need also to ensure that the social housing goes to LOCAL people, not from upcountry! We've got to fight keep Bude as a beautiful, place for people to have a holiday 'away from it all'. It means that every single adult resident needs to be aware, listen to what is being proposed and if we do not think it will enhance Bude then we get together and shout!. There - I've had my say! LO.

ReportI agree with Canalman. It makes Bude what it is, beautiful, and so much quieter than if you had a railway. I currently live in a Warwichshire village, only 5 - 10 miles away from the HS2O line, which has now been given the go ahead. Hundreds of families loosing their homes and farms......evedently 14 trains per hour will wizz past at over 220 minles per hour and guess what not even stop in Coventry, so you would have to drive to Birmingham 40 mins north on a good day to get on, to get to London quicker !!! just doesnt make sense........Cant wait to live in Bude

ReportVery good point, Canalman. It is perhaps its geographical isolation that helps to make Bude the place it is, with its own unique character.

ReportDoesn't anyone think that Bude is like it is, ie the way we all love it, because it doesn't have a railway line, or easy transport links, or large national chain shops? It's easy to think that with a railway, Bude would be exactly the same as it is now, only with a railway line, but that can lead to the town becoming larger, more industrialised, more of a magnet for developers. I, too, have to make long journeys away from Bude, and yes it's inconvenient at times, but it's better than the alternative - growing into a large town just like any other. I suppose if I wanted to live somewhere with good transport links, easier access, a nearby airport, I could always move to Newquay.

ReportI must admit that if going to London or up country, I tend to drive to Tiverton Parkway (at which point I may as well join the M5) from where I can also sometimes get cheaper advance fares (rail ticket costs is another story) ......but yes, 2 hours of driving to catch a train seems a little crazy..........
A rail link may also make people more likely to travel to farther flung parts of Cornwall and certainly could make hospital appointments in Truro, Exeter, and Plymouth, etc., a lot easier. All a pipe dream, I fear. When people in the cities complain about waiting 10 mins for a train/bus/tube it does make me smile!! And a tad envious.........
