THE SEA POOL at Bude could get new beach huts after proposals were approved by planners.

The initial lease period for those who want to buy the use of the huts will be five years, with the first two years' rent payable in advance and the balance at the start of the third year.

The Friends of Bude Sea Pool (FoBSP) negotiated with Cornwall Council and it has been decided to erect permanent wooden structures from a local supplier.

The precise lease terms are yet to be finalised, but are expected to include buildings and third-party insurance, and the initial painting of the huts.

Lessees will be able to choose colours from a specific palette and future maintenance will be an annual obligation.

Anyone who wants to confirm an interest should write out a cheque for £500 to FoBSP and send it to SeventhWaveGallery, 21118 Belle Vue, Bude, EX23 8JS. In the event of oversubscription, a public lottery will be held to choose the lessees.

The balance of the first two years' payment of £1,500 will be payable when the keys are handed over, expected to take place no later than April 1.

"We thank everyone for their support of our historic sea pool," said beach huts co-ordinator Martyn Holehouse. "We still have a lot of work to do to ensure the future of the pool, so all offers of help, support and sponsorship are gratefully received."
