Radio 2 Drivetime host Simon Mayo is best known for his work on the airwaves, but the DJ is now also a published author. Yesterday he visited Bude to promote his debut children's novel 'Itch', the setting of which is based on Simon's childhood holidays in the town.

'Itch' is a thriller which tells the story of 14 year old Itchingham Lofte, an accidental, accident-prone hero who uses science is his weapon. It was published in March this year and has been described by the Financial Times Books of the Year as "a gripping read".
Taking time out from presenting his radio show yesterday afternoon, Simon called in at Budehaven Community School. During his visit he spent his time chatting to a number of sixth form English students, answering their questions about his writing techniques and inspiration. He then gave a presentation to the school's Year 8 and finished by signing copies of his book.
A spokesperson for Budehaven's English department said: "Living in such a remote location means that we are rarely able to play host to well-known personalities, so this was a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to meet a published author, especially one as renowned as Simon Mayo!"
After his visit to the school Simon headed to the Spencer Thorn bookshop in the town where he met a number of readers and signed more copies of the book.
