Strike Action May Close Schools Next Week
By BudePeeps | Wednesday, November 23, 2011, 18:33
As many people will be aware, there is a strong chance of national industrial action affecting local schools on Wednesday, 30th November. Budehaven Head Teacher, David Barton, today issued a letter to parents advising that the school will be closed that day if industrial action goes ahead, on grounds of health and safety. Other schools, including primaries, may also be affected, so do check with your child's school and check those school bags for letters home. Stratton Primary School has already announced on its website that it will be closed for the day on 30th due to the industrial action.

Yes true the choice is mine, having both advantages and disadvantages. Like sitting in my office at home, on the PC, nice and warm, watching others scrapping the ice of their cars to get to a job they may not enjoy....but hey ho !

ReportIf you chose to be 'self-employed', that is your choice......no holiday pay?, your choice.....no sick pay?....your choice. Like the rest of the working class you must pay tax. You can give yourself a pension if you wish,.....your choice. As employees we have work for an employer we hope is honest and pays a living wage......what can an employee do if his rights are removed and his boss decides to cut wages, pensions, holidays, safety rules and the like? (Don't start me on Health & Safety....I worked in a very dangerous industry and H&S saved many a life, those who knock it must sit behind a desk where the only danger is spilling your coffee in your lap! The right to strike is paramount.

ReportLandline, agreed, we all make our choices. But having paid substantial amounts into my teachers' pension in the past, it feels a little rich that the goalposts are now being changed. Like you, I am now self-employed/freelance (again, my choice) with all the disadvantages you mention - and a few advantages, too - still, at least I can continue in the safe knowledge that I can't rely on any teachers' pension for a good while yet!

ReportI must repeat what I said origionaly. I along with millions of others who are self employed...... No one pays me when I have a day off or a holiday and no one pays into my pension, we have to make provision ourselfs and still pay tax. The public sector workers should think themselves lucky....we choose our career path, so stick with it

ReportI'm not sure I'd go with the idea of the priesthood as vocational..............but yes, parents are ultimately responsible for the children they choose to have, and teachers (most of whom probably do have a sense of 'vocation,' to be honest) are workers who have a right to take industrial action like other public sector workers, in order to protest about having their pensions eroded. Not that Gove will listen...........
