Thefts from Vehicles Between Bideford and Cornwall
By BudePeeps | Friday, January 20, 2012, 14:51
Although the focus of this police report is on North Devon, it does reach to the Cornwall border, so may affect people in Morwenstow and other rural villages. The preventative comments are a good reminder for everyone. Bideford police are reminding people to think security when leaving their vehicles unattended. This follows an increase in the number of thefts from vehicles in the rural area past Hartland and out to the cornish border.

A crime prevention operation spanning a 12-month period saw over 800 vehicles left unattended with items clearly on display. Items included handbags, wallets, cameras, binoculars, mobile phones, sports equipment, tool boxes, and CD collections. 77 vehicles were left with the keys in the ignition.
"All these items are of potential value to an opportune thief" said PC Richard Rowlands.
Crime in the area has fallen year on year. 2008 saw 131 reports of theft from vehicles, falling to 56 in 2011.
Already this year, there have been 10 reports of theft from vehicles. A large percentage of items stolen are satellite navigation systems left on the windscreen. The theft of petrol from cars has also increased.
"Most vehicle crime occurs as a result of an opportunist thief seeing something of value which is poorly secured. Crime can be prevented if owners employ a number of security measures". said PC Rowlands.
Drivers are urged to remove valuables from sight, park in a secure location and avoid leaving vehicles in isolated locations.
If anyone witnesses anyone acting suspiciously, call the police on 101.
