World Book Night - Free Books for Bude
By BudePeeps | Tuesday, February 28, 2012, 20:45
One of the greatest gifts my parents ever gave me was in teaching me to read, reinforced by teachers once at school. I love reading so much that I eventually pursued a degree in literature which was fantastic - I'd studied other subjects but this was the best ever! So, reading has always been a great love.
Books - a change from the keyboard!!
On behalf of Bude People, I therefore applied to be a World Book Night giver, and will soon have 24 copies of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen to gift to people.
World Book Night happens on 23rd April, being the birth and death day of Shakespeare, and the death day of Cervantes, so a biggie in terms of literature.
The aim is to give the books to non or light readers to help encourage a love of and passion for reading.
It must be said that Pride and Prejudice was not my first choice. I chose Rebecca, primarily because it is set in the West Country. However, I have read Pride and Prejudice many times and it is a wonderful book (also with some fabulous film/TV drama adaptations) so I have no problems in promoting it. It is a fascinating study of morals, the class system, character and is actually very funny in parts. Indeed, I hope to attend the Austen Festival in Bath later this year.
So, Bude - 24 copies will be in my hands in April to give away - and I need your help.
My challenge to you is to tell me who you think would benefit from a copy of Pride and Prejudice and why. They will need to be prepared to have their photo taken for Bude People. I'm not making any judgements, though feel I should donate a copy to Budehaven School just because it is our local high school........so, 23 left to go, first come first served so long as I get a reason.
Your ideas, please, for who and why - and how I may contact them - and if you prefer to inbox then it is firstname.lastname@example.org
Hoping for your help on this one............
