The medical centre is not going to happen - the local primary care trust/doctors do not want it (and could not afford it, anyway) - it was a phantom carrot dangled by Catesby to attempt to sweeten the deal in local eyes without consulting the local medical establishment.
The jobs are illusory, short term labouring posts (Catesby would bring their own craftsmen), which will diappear when the new town (400 houses = approx 1600/2000 people = town) is built. Conservative estimate 1600 - 100 (short term) jobs - what do the other 1500 do?
I feel sorry for the people in the Crescent and the Strand - all that extra tarmac & roofs = greatly increased run-off, instead of it being absorbed into grass meadows = more flooding - 1990 again, only worse!

ReportOnce again Binhamy Farm is back on the agenda and once again incorrect statements are made. Dawnrw states...'most people think the application will be unsuccesful'....do they really? There was an anti Binhamy meeting held at the Parkhouse Centre a while ago, and I suspect that most of the people attending were against the developement, which resulted in remarks on this site that, 'The majority of Bude residents were anti Binhamy'. I could say that those who did not attend the meeting (like me) are obviously for the development, which of course is also absolute rubbish. Bude needs to develope or stagnate and die.
Well, my 'evidence' was taken from a poll on the Bude & Stratton Post website, which I agree is not necessarily representative, but is all we have. with 97% saying that they felt Catesby would be unsuccessful compared to 3% who thought they would succeed. Taking your point that any area needs to develop or risks stagnation, the question, I guess, is what does Bude need to develop? For example, would an arts and cultural centre be better than yet another retail development of high street names one sees throughout the UK? Would this just draw people away from the centre so that more businesses would close? Maybe we need to think more imaginatively, to assume that people may like to do something other than....erm, shopping, in their spare time?
Polls in newspapers usually attract the 'anti' group, the pro group don't feel so intense about whatever the subject. Let everyone in Bude have a ballot paper pushed through their letter boxes, then you can quote percentages. I, like a lot of others, don't buy the Bude & Stratton Post. The Daily Express regular
y have polls with questions like 'Is Tony Blair the worst PM in history?'......and the votes come in as Yes 99% No's 1%....surprise, surprise. Newspaper votes mean nothing. I am putting my soap box back in the loft. Have a nice week.
It's good to have the debate, Robbo, and a soapbox can be useful. You're absolutely right re the statistics but it least it's got a few people talking, eh? Good idea about a Bude referendum though........ :)

The Binhamy nightmare will happen if there are the usual palms held out to be greased-meanwhile,how do we organise a protest that will be taken notice of and draw in the Spotlight team and BBC? I am beginning to fear that Bude has no heart because it's been taken over by the Urban Faceless, who love new shops, however pointless and souless, and seek comfort in numbers, swarming about on pavements....try moving to Wolverhampton if the cap fits. As for the 100 jobs-for whom, pray? people that move into the new developments no doubt. This is all about people making money out of development, and has nothing to do with anything else-greed,greed,greed.lets have a cultural centre up there based round the medieval site, with a Park n Ride that would release one of the parking zones for a permanent farmers market site.,,and give the empty buses that troll around Bude something to do.

ReportI think every councilor from the local town council to Cornwall county is opposed to the plan - even a government enquiry ruled against it. It's just that Catesby won't give up - they stand to make too much profit out of it to cut their losses. Bu**er what the locals want - Catesby want their ££££££'s so they can all get big bonuses!

An extra 1000+ people using Bude and spending money year-round - sounds good to me!
I fully understand the problems, but problems can be overcome and schools, medical centres etc will follow when the demand is realised.

breakwaterboy you say 1000+ using bude and spending money all year round but how many of the new houses will be holiday lets and second homes?? plus how many tourists will avoid bude because it has lost its charm and is overcrowded??
I fully agree that bude needs to develop BUT its too much too soon. they should of allowed 100 houses and then in a year or two consider a 100 more and carry that on providing there is demand. the jobs that will be created will be mainly summer jobs and catesby will bring in there own builders like they do on all there developments. there is also the high risk of floods at the bottom of the hill and no real road improvements for roads that already struggle at times.
this is a case of profit before common sense. and central government making decisions based on targets instead of actual need.. doesn't cameron keep going on about local people having more say in there local area?? have not seen any evidence of that yet.
