One aspect of a computer that causes a lot of confusion is the difference between the computer disk and computer memory and therefore what affect the size of each has. Here’s an analogy that may help –

    Disc Space
Think of the disc space as filing cabinets or cupboards. The more cabinets you have the more files and boxes you can store, but you have to take things out of the cabinet before you can use them. The fuller the cabinet becomes the more difficult it is to find the files and boxes you need. Installing a bigger, replacement cabinet involves moving lots of boxes and files from the old cabinet to the new one.

    Computer Memory (Ram)
Think of computer memory as your work desk or table. The bigger the desk the more boxes and files you can work on at the same time. On a small desk you run out of space much quicker and have to put one box back in the cupboard before you can start on the next one. Regardless of desk size, the fuller the desk gets the more difficult work becomes and the greater the chance of a box crashing to the floor. Installing a bigger desk is very easier. Clear and remove the old desk. Replace it with the new desk and start working again.
