Cynical, but not unlikely. About a year or so ago US food processors started making packaging smaller with less contents. According to the manufacturers, this was in response to the bad publicity surrounding the obesity plague. However, the more astute noticed that although the price (usually) went down, it wasn't pro-rata and in effect was a whopping great price increase by stealth.
