Cornwall Council is contacting all parish and town councils as part of a review of the funding of public conveniences in Cornwall.

The council traditionally funds the running costs of about 220 public conveniences but does not have a statutory requirement to do so.

As part of its overall programme of budget savings Cornwall Council is looking at how £1 million could be saved over the next four years through measures such as delegating local public convenience management to parish councils or reducing opening times.

The council will also be looking at the possibility of charging for the use of public conveniences or closing some sites.

Julian German, Cornwall Council cabinet member for the environment, said of the review: “We have some difficult decisions ahead of us and we will be working with local members and liaising with our partners in the town and parish councils to find the best solution for the people of Cornwall.

“We are fully aware of the importance of public conveniences to residents and visitors to Cornwall but we believe that savings can be made through a range of measures.”
