April 3rd by giving her a little something, whether it is your time,
a lovely meal out or a gift. And for those who dislike the commercialism
associated with it, well, the gift-buying is apparently a postwar phenomenon. Prior to
Mother’s Day dying out briefly in the 19th century, it was observed as a
religious observance on the 4th Sunday of Lent. Anyway, whatever the reason, most Mums like being
made a fuss of. If you’re not sure what
to spend your hard-earned pennies on, remember to shop local so you can see what you're buying while supporting local traders. Your first stop may be Wroe’s, Bude’s favourite
department store, which offers a variety of opportunities. Janine Everett, Wroe's store manager, runs through some of
the goodies they have in store:
“We have many things for the perfect Mother’s Day gift. We
stock lovely photo frames, scented candles and pretty cushions in our upstairs
linen department. Our fashion department stocks everything from funky nail files, and trendy cotton scarves and fragrances, to summer t-shirts, leather
handbags and smart dresses. Our cookware department stocks collectable glasses
in presentation boxes, lovely Cath Kidston china mugs, time saving electricals
and chocolates”.
If Mum is a keen reader, abandon Amazon and check out your
local bookstores instead. One which sells stationery, cards and other
attractive items, alongside some fabulous - and sometimes signed - books, is Spencer Thorn’s Bookshop. For
flowers, you may wish to take a walk along the canal wharf to Bleujen’s
florist’s. There, award winning florist, Erica Tippett, specialises in creating fresh, innovative, unique designs for the
occasion. Or try Four Seasons florist at Belle Vue, who pride themselves on using Cornish flowers in season. Of course, the town is packed with other shops depending upon your Mum's tastes: jewellery, chocolate, lovely soaps and smellies. Try Wild Wood on Lansdown Road which provides good service and lovely cards. Or just opt to take her out for a meal instead, with plenty of local restaurants to choose from. Any other suggestions of great places to shop for that special gift?

What a great idea, to have a day off from domesticity.......... :)

ReportHello, History say's Mothering Sunday was a day when domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mothers and other family members. It was often the only time that whole families could gather together. The domestic servents would walk someimes for miles across fields and lanes before reaching home. Traditionaly they would pick wild flowers for their Mothers on the way. It is associated with Easter and falls on the 4th Sunday of Lent. More information can be found on Wikipeadia.
