It is the mast of the Elizabeth and used to bear a small plaque advising of the fact but I believe this is long gone. The Elizabeth was a locally owned ketch, built in Salcombe in 1838, she was wrecked near the half-tide cross on Summerleaze beach on 16th February 1912, whilst bringing in a cargo of coal from Newport.
